LIRR Train Accident and Derailment Leaves Three Fatally Injured
A train accident and derailment involving a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train left three victims fatally injured. Around 7 pm on Tuesday night, a truck, trying to speed ahead of the train, collided into the train in Westbury, New York, which caused the train to derail. The three occupants in the vehicle sustained fatal injuries while train passengers incurred numerous minor injuries during the truck and train collision. About 800 passengers occupied the train which was traveling from Ronkonkoma, New York to New York Penn Station.
A truck driving fast cannot expect to “beat” a train traveling at full speed without dire consequences. Part of this is because of the enormous girth of a train, and another part is due to the inability of a train to stop at a moment’s notice. Fatalities and serious injuries may be the result of a collision between a train and a truck, especially if the train derails from the tracks.
