PIP in New Jersey stands for your personal injury protection coverage in your auto insurance policy. What it means exactly, however, is somewhat confusing. It is actually coverage of your medical expenses if you get into an accident.
Your medical expenses, if you are in an accident, will not be covered by your regular medical insurance or your Medicare, if you have that, but rather by your auto insurance PIP – only.
The Meaning of No – Fault
If you are rear-ended by another car and it is clearly, 100 percent, the other driver’s fault, under the personal injury protection law in New Jersey, the at-fault driver’s insurance still will not pay your medical bills. Your own insurance coverage, under the personal injury protection coverage, will pay for your medical expenses. This is what ‘no-fault’ means, and New Jersey is a no-fault insurance state.
Minimal PIP protection is less expensive, but it will only cover up to $15,000 in the case of an accident in which you are injured. Even a few nights in the hospital can add up to far more than that. A surgery alone can cost substantially more than your minimal coverage.
Most people have no idea what PIP is and what the impact of too-little PIP coverage can mean in the event of an accident. Before you make a decision to go “on the cheap,” think about your family and your future. Insurance is just that – insurance in the case of an accident or catastrophe. It’s better to be covered! Is an extra 60 bucks a year worth it? Probably.
