New Jersey Clergy Task Force Arrests Priest Accused of Abusing Girl
The New Jersey Clergy Task Force made their first arrest on Wednesday of a priest who is accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl. The 63-year-old priest from Phillipsburg, New Jersey was charged with multiple counts of sexual assault against the girl. He allegedly assaulted her between the years of 1990 and 1994 while serving as a priest at the St. Cecelia Church in Iselin, New Jersey. Currently, he works at the St. Philip and St. James Church in Phillipsburg. A hearing has been set for Friday.
In September 2018, the New Jersey Clergy Task Force formed to investigate clergy abuse throughout the state. The Pennsylvania grand jury report, which detailed sexual abuse accusations against over 300 Catholic priests, spurred State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal to create a team to conduct their own investigations. Apparently, some priests listed in the Pennsylvania report also served in New Jersey.
