NJ Drivers Ranked Among the Worst
A recent study has confirmed what many of us who reside in New Jersey already know—that New Jersey has some of the worst drivers in America. This study was conducted utilizing data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and looked at the number of insured drivers, the rate of DUI arrests, vehicular-related fatalities, and Google trends on automobile ticket-related searches. New Jersey comes in at number four out of 50 states. By examining this data, researchers determined that the states with the worst drivers are:
- Florida
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- New Jersey
- Delaware
- Alabama
- Vermont
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Nevada
Looking at this list, six of the top 10 states are in the South and Southeastern regions of the United States. This is a result of a large percentage of drivers in those regions being uninsured, coupled with a high rate of DUI incidents. Interestingly, Florida tops all the other states in Google searches for “speeding tickets” and “traffic tickets.” Although this could be the result of a strong police presence, other factors indicate that Florida drivers may be willing to take more risks, like running yellow lights.
Insurance Premiums in New Jersey
As if it were not bad enough that New Jersey received this unfortunate distinction, it gets worse. When this list is compared to the list of states with the highest auto insurance premiums, only New Jersey and Florida make both lists. Researchers compiled insurance rates from six major insurance carriers, across 10 different zip codes in each of the fifty states. They examined rates for a hypothetical 40-year-old male driver with a clean driving record, and found that New Jersey drivers pay an average of almost $1,600 per year in premiums.
Many of the reasons why our auto insurance rates are high in New Jersey are the same reasons why we have so many car accidents: poor conditions of roads and highways, and a large volume of commuters on our roads every day. Dangerous winter weather conditions also may play a role.
