eHighway Electrified Tractor
To reduce air pollution near ports around the country, Mack Trucks has developed a tractor that runs on electricity by attaching to overhead power lines. Like a trolley system, the electric tractor would run on a catenary system that uses overhead power line electricity. The use of the catenary system offers an alternative solution to the use of diesel fuel.
eHighway Innovations
The tractor prototype was developed in conjunction with an eHighway project currently being tested near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in California. Both ports receive a large quantity of goods from the Asian market, making them two of the busiest ports in the United States. Global technology conglomerate, Siemens, has provided the infrastructure for the eHighway project. Earlier this month a demonstration of the eHighway took place in Carson, California. The one-mile demonstration took place on South Alameda Street from East Lomita Boulevard to the Dominguez Channel. The tractor’s ability to run on the eHighway demonstrated that an electrified tractor may be a feasible option in the future.
Siemens has been constructing its eHighway infrastructure for the last five years. The eHighway is meant to connect the busy ports of Los Angles and Long Beach to inland distribution centers. The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is sponsoring the eHighway demonstration project with hope of creating a viable zero-emission area near freight-intensive areas, including large ports such as Los Angles and Long Beach. Poor air quality at the ports has been a problem for many years due to excessive smog forming emissions.
Mack’s electrified tractor prototype was made by equipping a Pinnacle daycab with a proprietary plug-in hybrid electric driveline. Using a special piece of equipment supplied by Siemens, the truck’s driveline can be powered by the overhead electric lines.
