Dangerous Roads and Crashes – NJ
It turns out that New Jersey has some of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in the tri-state area. The Tri-State Transportation Campaign report notes that Burlington Pike, in Burlington County, Black Horse Pike in Atlantic County, and Route 1, in Middlesex County, are the deadliest areas in the state for pedestrians. The latter two have each had nine fatalities during the years 2009 – 2011.
The only other roadways with more pedestrian deaths from crashes are Route 24, the Hempstead Turnpike and Fulton Avenue in Nassau, New York, where there were 14 deaths, Manhattan’s Broadway, with 12 deaths, and the Jericho Turnpike and Middle Country Road in Suffolk with 11 deaths, according to the Tri-State report.
Other deadly and dangerous New Jersey roadways include Route 30, or the White Horse Pike, Camden County; Route 9, Middlesex; Routes 1 and 9 in Union County; Route 46, Morris County, Route 9 in Ocean County, and JFK Boulevard or Route 501 in Hudson County.
Many of these roads encourage walkers because they are near malls or stores, but they do not have a safe way to support pedestrian activity.
